Naples

Naples is a city of beautiful ornate churches, dark scary alleyways and the best pizza in the world.  It was raining when we went there which only added a big dollop of mystery to the experience.

People rush by in the rain.

The buildings look dark and ominous.

It was even wet for the soldiers guarding the school just outside hotel!

The churches in Naples are amazing.  Il Doumo (the cathedral of Naples) was built in the 15th century and is home to the breathtaking chapel of the patron Saint of Naples, San Gennaro.  Three times a year there is a Festival of San Gennaro where the famous blood liquefaction ceremony takes place.

San Gennaro gets dressed up  for the occasion.

They like their halos here.

Nearly everyone has one.

Some get crowns.

While some go crazy!

I liked the lit up halos. If I had one it'd definitely be one of these.

The full works in the halo department!

The streets are dark and forbidding.  Cobbles were pretty slippy in the wet!

People hang their washing from the upper windows in the narrow streets.

The city is alive.  We were staying in the University area with great graffiti and artwork on the walls.

However the best artwork we stumbled on was definitely Caravaggio's Seven Works of Mercy at Pio Monte della Misericordia.  Breathtaking.
