The Colosseum

It was a beautiful day to visit what is the largest amphitheatre ever built.  Commonly known as the Colosseum this massive structure is actually officially known as the Amphitheatrum Flavium.  The sunlight made it look like the lights had been left on on the second floor!

The outside walls are immense and the white stone reflects sunlight in a unique and beautiful way,  The building has been standing since roughly 70AD.

Wow.  Seriously.

The Colosseum is big.  It could easily hold over 50,000 people in the audience.

Inside, the arena was about the size of a football field, with tunnels underneath for the poor Gladiators and animals who were the entertainment. Posh people sat on the lower seats, normal people on the mid-levels, with the Vomitorium at the third level being free!

The carvings are exquisite...

The sheer size was sometimes hard to appreciate until you stood right next to some of the detailing.

This fragment of a statue was beautiful.  Incredibly the muscle tone and vein on the rear leg of the horse can still be clearly seen after 2000 years!

Official carvings...

...and unofficial doodlings - roughly translated as "Burio was 'ere" was on the back of a stone carving.

Even the public water fountains were amazing!  The water was nice too!
