The Roman Forum
The Roman Forum can be found in the centre of Rome. It was a lovely day to walk around and soak up the history. This is Julius Caesar. Yes, the Julius Caesar.
SPQR is short for Senātus Populusque Rōmānus (The Roman Senate and People). It's still in use today, having been used continuously since Roman times.
Right in the centre of the Roman Forum site is what remains of the Temple of Castor and Pollux. Built in 495BC. Castor and Pollux were the twin sons of Zeus. Originally this is where the Roman senate would have met.
At the foot of the Capitoline hill lies the temple of Saturn. Built in 497BC this building was primarily usedas the Roman Treasury.
Just behind the Temple of Saturn lies the Temple of Vespasian and Titus. Vespasian was a Roman emperor, and Titus was his son. Building a temple to you and your dad was a pretty good way of getting yourself deified in Roman times.
Back in the centre of the Roam forum lies the Temple of Vesta, which was used by the Vestal Virgins. This was a women only temple. Inside was the sacred fire which, if extinguished, would bring dire consequences to the city.
The Temple of Antoninus and Faustina has been adapted into a catholic church!
The Column of Phocas was the last monument built within the Forum. Dedicated to Phocas who came to power by killing Maurice, the existing Emperor, and his six sons!
The arch of Septimius Severus was built around 200AD to commemorate Emperor Severus's two successful military campaigns agains the Parthians.
Some of the beautiful text in the Forum.
